Calendar Advisory: Cumberland's Fall Family Festival Set for Oct. 9

Who: Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home (CPCH)

What: The 8th Annual Fall Family Festival, a free-admission community event benefiting Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home.

A very special part of this year's festival will be the "unveiling" of the entry for the Guinness World Record for Largest Sausage Kolache. Denton's own Kolache Haven will be trying for the record with a 9-foot kolache. After the documentation is finished, the kolache will be served to festival goers.

Another new feature this year is a raffle for family fun prizes. The Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, Grand Prairie Air Hogs, Frisco RoughRiders and many other organizations and businesses have donated prizes.

Returning attractions this year include a custom car show by FAT Cars as well as inflatables, games and a DJ from Hero's The Party Experience. Other favorites include a hayride to the pumpkin patch, festival food, carnival games and the "Bargain Barn" sale.

When: Saturday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: The Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home campus at 1304 Bernard St. in Denton

Why: This event supports the work of CPCH. The 106-year-old agency protects children who need a safe place to live, sustains single-parent families as they work toward self-sufficiency and equips families for success through the Family Outfitters Program, a sliding-fee-scale counseling and education clinic open to the entire community.

Denton Airshow Set for June 19

DENTON - The Denton Air Fair Committee and the award-winning Denton Airport have teamed up with David Schultz Airshows LLC to bring another fantastic aerial event to North Texas. This one-day show on June 19 will feature the best in airshow entertainment.

Headlining the performances will be the USAF A-10 Thunderbolt II West Coast Demonstration Team. Other performers include Mike "Spanky" Galloway in this Pitts S2C, Jason Newberg in his T-28C Trojan, the Texas Twisters Formation Team, the Flight of the Phoenix Escadrille Team, and many others. There will be static aircraft displays, vendors, a children's play area featuring the Denton Public Library's "Library Larry" and plenty of food and drinks. Longhorn Helicopter will also be offering rides.

Advance tickets are only $5 and are available until June 15 at all PointBank locations and at Business Air at the Denton Airport. Tickets will be $8 at the gate. Children under age 6 get in free. Gates open at 10 a.m. and opening ceremonies will begin at noon and will feature the award-winning Liberty Christian choir.

Ten foot by ten foot preferred seating areas in prime viewing locations are available for an additional $25. Patrons in preferred seating may put up 10'x 10' tents and bring in their own chairs. For reservations, contact Kristi Galan at kgalan@pointbank.com.

The Denton Airport is located 4 miles west of I-35E in Denton.

Food, Music and Fun for All at the 14^th Annual Mudbug Boil on May 1

DENTON - Crawfish, fried fish, fixins, live music and good times are in store at the 14^th Annual Denton Mudbug Boil on May 1. Held at 1211 W. Hickory St. behind Riprock's and Lucky Lou's from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the event benefits several local charities, including Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home, Friends of the Family, AIDS Services of North Texas and Mothers of Multiples. Entry-only tickets are $5 and all-you-can-eat (while it lasts) tickets are $15.

Musical guests will include Rodney Parker and 50 Peso Reward, The Heelers, The Von Ehrics, Big Daddy Alright, Rtb2, The Shed (x- Doosu) and The King Bucks. The first band starts at noon.

There also will be a children's play area and a silent auction.

Local Agencies Partner to Promote Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time devoted to raising awareness about child abuse and neglect and methods of prevention. The numbers are alarming - there are nearly 200,000 reported cases of abuse or neglect in Texas each year, including more than 4,700 alleged victims and 4 fatalities in Denton County in fiscal year 2009.

During April, three local non-profit agencies, Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home (CPCH), Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Denton County, and Children's Advocacy Center for Denton County (CACDC), are joining together to help transform communities into places that care about and actively support children and families.

"Child abuse prevention is a community responsibility, and finding solutions depends on the involvement and cooperation of non-profit agencies, schools, religious organizations, the business community, government and law enforcement," said Caroline Lara, director of advancement at CPCH.

In that spirit of cooperation, the Denton County Commissioners Court and the Denton City Council will be issuing proclamations during their April 6 meetings declaring April Child Abuse Prevention Month in Denton County and the City of Denton, and urging all citizens to work together to help reduce child abuse and neglect significantly in years to come.

CPCH, CASA and CACDC are offering the following events in April:

April 1 - 14^th Annual CACDC Community Breakfast featuring keynote speaker Lt. Governor David Dewhurst; 7:30 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lewisville
April 9 - Forgotten Children: CASA Attorney Ad Litem Training at the Oakmont Country Club in Corinth
April 10 - Art Gala 2010 hosted by Cloud 9 Salon and The Grotto Restaurant to benefit CASA and CACDC; at Cloud 9 Salon and Spa in Flower Mound
April 10 - Becoming a Love and Logic Parent® class focusing on parenting children age 6 and older; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at CPCH in Denton
April 17 - CACDC Picnic on Parker Square, a free family picnic; bring blankets and enjoy fun activities like bounce houses, arts and crafts, and even a chance to sit in a police car and fire truck, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Parker Square in Flower Mound

Nuconsteel's Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament to Benefit CPCH

Enjoy a great day of golf while helping North Texas kids, teens and families by playing in the Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament at The Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch in Denton on April 24. Hosted by Nuconsteel, the tournament benefits Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home (CPCH) in Denton.

The format is a four-man scramble; individual players are welcome. Tee-off is at 8 a.m. Cost is $100 per player and includes golf, lunch and prizes.

Join CPCH for a brand new event! Just for the FUN(ds) of It will be a relaxing night of fun and comedy beginning at 6:45 p.m. with complementary wine, beer, and hors d'oeuvres, followed by family friendly entertainment headlining comedian and Denton native Tony Stone with other performances by members of the cast of Denton Community Theatre's "Cinderella." Tickets are $50 each and proceeds support CPCH's programs for vulnerable children, teens and families.

The evening's featured performer, Tony Stone, has spent many years on the comedy circuit with three national television appearances on A&E as well as Comedy Central. Tony is a Denton High School graduate who has toured all over the country and worked as the comedy entertainment for a cruise line over the past ten years. Tony has opened for known legends such as Rodney Dangerfield, Tower of Power and Blue Oyster Cult.

New Director of Pastoral Care Joins CPCH

            Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home (CPCH) is pleased to announce that Rev. Stephanie Scrudder Brown has joined its staff as director of pastoral care. Brown earned a B.A. in Christian education from Bethel College in 1987 and a M. Div. from Memphis Theological Seminary in 1991. She was ordained to word and sacrament in May 1992 by the Red River Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
            Brown has served the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination in several different capacities. She has worked as an associate pastor, a co-pastor with her husband, a hospital chaplain, and most recently, a team leader for the Pastoral Development Ministry Team at the Cumberland Presbyterian Center in Memphis, Tenn.
            "CPCH welcomes Stephanie," says Rev. Kevin R. Henson, CPCH's executive director. "While CPCH does not force a particular type of religious belief on any of the people we serve, Stephanie's pastoral presence will help us remain faithful to our mission as an ecumenical ministry of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church by providing voluntary opportunities for spiritual growth."

CPCH's 7th Annual Fall Family Festival Offers Fun and Food on Oct. 3

DENTON - Families from around North Texas are invited to enjoy a day filled with fun and food at Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home's 7th Annual Fall Family Festival on Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1304 Bernard Street in Denton. Proceeds will benefit CPCH's programs to help vulnerable kids, teens and families.
Admission to the event is free, as are the activities in the Kids' Fun Zone, which is presented by CPCH's Residential Care Program. The Kids' Fun Zone will feature giant inflatables, carnival games, face painting, and hands-on art projects. Other activities, such as pony and train rides, toy car races, and a hayride to the pumpkin patch, are offered for a small fee.
"CPCH is excited to be offering some brand new attractions for this year's Fall Family Festival," said Caroline Lara, CPCH's director of advancement and coordinator of the event. "Kids and parents will all enjoy the custom car, truck and motorcycle show by FAT Cars. We'll also have twice the number of giant inflatables, plus a DJ and Tangles and Twists hair sculpters from Hero's the Party Experience."
The popular "Bargain Barn" indoor garage sale, presented by CPCH's Family Outfitters Program, will be bigger than ever this year. Items to be sold include clothing, new toys and games, housewares, school supplies and holiday decorations.
Delicious festival foods and drinks will also be available for purchase, including fruit kebabs and Kolache Haven kolaches offered by CPCH's Single Parent family Program. There will be a food court in the Bargain Barn for indoor dining.
A fighter plane cockpit and ejection seat courtesy of the Frontiers of Flight Museum will be displayed, as well as a truck from Peterbilt and the Texas Farm Bureau's Mobile Learning Barn. St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Denton will provide a baby changing tent.

'Twogether in Texas' Premarital Workshop Offered in Denton

Couples planning to marry in Texas have the option to waive $60 of their marriage license fee by attending a free marriage education class before saying "I do." "Twogether in Texas" classes will focus on communication skills, conflict resolution and the elements of a healthy marriage. Non-married couples will receive a certificate of completion that is good for one year and serves as proof that the couple is eligible for the discounted marriage license fee.

Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home's next Twogether in Texas class is on July 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 909 Greenlee St. in Denton. While this class is free, preregistration is required. Call (940) 382-5112 x 252 for more information or to sign up.

'Becoming a Love and Logic® Parent' Class Offered on July 11

DENTON - Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home (CPCH) is offering a one-day "Becoming a Love and Logic® Parent" class on July 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This class will focus on the early childhood years.
Love and Logic® is a parenting method that uses humor, hope and empathy to build the adult/child relationship.
"This method emphasizes respect and dignity for both children and adults," says Amy Watson, CPCH's director of clinical services. "It provides real limits in a loving way and teaches consequences and healthy decision making."
Cost for the class is $35 per person, and both parents are encouraged to attend. A workbook will be offered for $10 (couples can share a workbook). Course attendees will receive a certificate at the end of the training.
Space is limited, so call (940) 382-5112 x 252 to reserve a spot. The class will be held on Cumberland's campus at 909 Greenlee St. in Denton.
