D's Story
"Before I came to the Children's Home, my life was bad. My parents didn't care about me and my sister. My dad always beat my mom. I would be scared to come out of my room. He would beat my sister, too, and I would pray to God that I would die. We moved around a lot. I didn't go to school that much. My dad and mom would do drugs and we would be home with no food.
So we went to CPCH. I love it here. I feel safe and there are a lot of people watching out for us. It's fun living with the other kids. I am on the football team at school. I am doing better in school than I was before because I'm getting more help from tutors.
So thank you CPCH for taking me and my sister in. Thank you very much."

"Cumberland made me see that everything can get better and it will. I have grown into a better person because of Cumberland and all the people here. They actually care about you and try to do what is best for you.
Everything I have ever wanted is in this home. It is safe and I feel cared for and I feel that people here actually want to help me succeed. I am so grateful for this home and everyone here and I just want to say that everything they have done for me is great, and I can't thank them enough."

"CPCH has given me hope and has inspired me to become a better person. I couldn't ask for anything better than a loving home and a caring family. CPCH has helped me so much along the way. The staff and volunteers are great.
I came to the Children's Home at the age of eight years old not knowing how to read or write. CPCH helped me a lot along the way because I hated reading and now I love reading – it's my favorite subject. They really, really have given me hope and I want to say thank you, thank you so much."

"What I enjoy most about volunteering here is the sense of helping out where help is needed. I loved
the Clothing Closet because it is necessary to help the residents with self-esteem and confidence,
which helps foster a positive outlook on life. I love recreation because I love kids! What better
way to help them grow up to be good, strong, positive role models in our community than through play,
sports and exercise?"

"Volunteering in the reception area has taught me that I am not as shy as I thought I was. I have expanded
my comfort zone by being able to greet people, directing visitors to appropriate areas, and answering the phone.
It has truly been a pleasurable experience!"

"The kids are what keep us coming back. Our group's members like knowing that they are making a difference
in the lives of the children in their community."

"Our experience with CPCH has been awesome - we have had the opportunity to meet and get to know some truly
great kids through sponsorship. It has been such a blessing to support them financially, emotionally and
spiritually and watch them grow into such fine young men and women. Our lives have been so enriched by these
kids, and we truly feel like we can help make a difference through our support of CPCH."
– Marci and Mark Kawalek, CPCH sponsors
Kay Goodman
"I have recently completed my allowed term on the Board of Trustees of CPCH. In that seven years, it has
been my privilege to observe and participate in the remarkable programming this facility provides to a
wide-range of families at risk."
– Kay Goodman, donor and former CPCH Board member
Mark Burroughs
"I cannot think of a more valuable institution for a finer, more deserving institution in terms of making a
difference in the lives of those it touches than the Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home."
– Mark Burroughs, Mayor of Denton and former CPCH Board member
